VOTE. PLEASE. TELL EVERYONE.
“Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting.” —FDR
This is the most important election of our lives. We at Smith + Connors believe deeply that voting is a duty. It is at the heart of our democratic system, and never before in our lifetimes has the moral imperative been greater to stand up and be counted.
Voter turnout in the United States is pathetic. According to the Census Bureau, there were about 246 million Americans old enough to vote, and only 138 million voted. That’s only about 55%. We place 26th out of 32 countries in the OECD. Twenty-sixth! Inexcusable!
Now, we are Smith + Connors are lucky for a lot of reasons, not least of which is that most of us live in Oregon, which has automatic voter registration and universal mail-in voting. It doesn’t get easier that it does here for those with an address to receive a ballot, fill it out, and mail it or drop it in a dropbox. (By the way: Do you know how much voting fraud there is here? Zero.)
Others around the country are dealing with a different situation. The venal, cynical attempts to disenfranchise voters are just another example of powerful bigots trying to silence people who want and deserve an expansion of rights in this country. We’re sick of it.
Individually, we’ve been phone banking, writing letters and postcards, and bugging our family members and friends in other states (our partner Becca, who's in Massachusetts, is already voting). Together, we are a small and mighty design and development team, and what we can do is design and code and spread the word.
So for the month of October until the election, our website is devoted to getting out the vote. The good people at Vote Save America have been doing amazing work. We urge you strongly to head here to find everything you need to share your feelings with your cousin Frida in Ohio and your college roommate Darren in Florida. Please, share freely. And VOTE!
